Wednesday 18th April, Day 1 of our STEMfest was very successful with over 90 Year 5 students from Broadwater CofE and St Peters Catholic Primary School. All the students enthusiastically joined in with an exciting range of space themed STEM activities, including stop motion filming using LEGO for Technology, infrared heat cameras to take each other’s pictures with ice cubes for Maths. They thoroughly enjoyed expanding and contracting marshmallows using a vacuum pump for Science! Thanks to all of the staff involved for their expertise, energy and enthusiasm.

Thursday 19th April, Day 2 we welcomed students from Whytemead Primary and Elm Grove Primary School. They got to experience similar activities to Day 1 and took part in building a tower out of paper which was tested against the pressures of the 'Vortex Gun', which was used to blow them down. The 'Vortex Gun' taught students about high and low pressures and how these affected the structures.
We took the opportunity to ask the pupils about their favourite part of day. See for yourself what they had to say:
Ethan “My favourite bit was creating an animation with LEGO! We made a car crash in space which is the most unlikely thing to happen but it was great fun. The most difficult part was trying not to make our hands appear in the pictures”
Vinnie “I have really enjoyed the Maths element. It has really helped me learn more about addition and subtraction”
Oliver “All of it! I’m really enjoying the STEMfest and I am having so much fun learning”
Tegan “I have really enjoyed working in a team and learning new skills”
Rufus “My favourite part of the day was learning about structures by using paper cups to create a sculpture. I learnt a lot about what shapes are involved to make the strongest structures”
Friday 20th April Day 3, we welcomed students from St Andrews CE, Chatsmore Catholic High and The Littlehampton Academy. They took part in Cracking the Code Festival, Computing, Maths and Engineering activities throughout the day. Similar to yesterday students took part in building paper towers to test against the 'Vortex Gun'. However the challenge was more difficult as they could not talk to each other verbally and had to use body language to communicate. As part of the computing challenge pupils learnt about coding and green screening for films. They learnt about the number bases binary and hexadecimal and how this relates to coding with ASCII.
