On Thursday 24th May we held our annual Work Store Awards celebrating students who have done exceptionally well in their BTEC work placement or who have undertaken additional work voluntarily in their own time.
We had 4 categories of achievers this year. All awards given celebrate students that have committed to a work placement, have evidence of learning from it and have received good feedback from the organisation concerned.
The following students all completed work placements to supplement their study programme this year.
All three students have contributed a great deal to the Marketing team throughout the year.
Jasmine Carey who signed up to be a journalist has produced 10 fantastic articles on a range of topics
Julie Jaresova has been the main events photographer for the Marketing team covering numerous events both large and small
Amy Ryder-Lee has been a huge asset to the Marketing team promoting the college and its ethos on Social Media
All 3 students won GOLD Work Store Awards.
Category 2 – Guided Learning Hours
The following students all completed work placements to supplement their study programme this year.
Amy Parker completed 44 hours volunteering with 2nd Lancing Guides
Nyasha Mukando completed 60 hours at Lloyds Pharmacy
Emily Cohen completed 60 hours at Offington Park Nursing Home
Only Matthew Brierly could be at the event to collect his award. Matthew signed up to participate in the 100 hours scheme for volunteers at Worthing Theatres where he carried out a variety of roles, front of house and back stage. So far he has managed to complete 75 hours and has therefore earned a GOLDaward.
Category 3 – Curriculum based work experience
The following students have each completed work experience related to their courses and have been recognised by their teachers and/or workplaces as being exceptional ambassadors for the college.
Rachel Dean and Beth McClean were nominated by Emma Prince, head of English. Both went to Worthing and Adur Borough Council to work in the Communications Team for 1 week. They wrote a fantastic article about their experience which was tweeted by the council!
L’haica Lamit was nominated by the H & SC team. She completed 2 work placements at The Hurst Nursing Home, Worthing and at Little Stars in Rustington. She demonstrated a good work ethic, good communication skills and good attendance which are all excellent skills for employment.
Harvey Winfield has been nominated by his Art teacher, his tutor AND his director for his excellent work placements at a local primary school Arts Day and with the College Nursery Forest School. Harvey was a great help with the nursery children and was mature and focussed in his work. He has since applied for an apprenticeship at the nursery this year.
Each of these students have earned GOLD Work Store Awards.
Category 4 – Independent students
These students decided to organise work placements for themselves in order to learn about or to gain experience of a particular career.
Thembelihle Moyo volunteered at Heene Primary School for over 50 hours where she has learned to be patient with each child and engage in their interests, she also learned about the way children process at school and the responsibilities of teachers. Thembelihle received very good feedback from the school and has earned a SILVER Work Store Award.
Ben Philips was considering civil engineering as a career and so carried out a week with Hop consulting civil and structural engineers. Ben not only achieved all his goals for the week but found out about the range of job roles in the industry and the variety of projects that the profession is involved in. He learned CAD skills, lots of engineering terminology and gained an introduction to engineering mathematics. Hop said, ‘It was lovely to have Ben with us for the week, he is a bright and hardworking student.’ Ben has earned a GOLD Work Store Award.
The final two awards go to students who have shown commitment to volunteering over the two years that they have been in college.
Chloe Smith received a GOLD Award last year for her volunteering with the 1st Littlehampton Brownies and for her work in a charity shop for her DofE award. She also commenced volunteering at Riverbeach Primary School. This year, Chloe has continued to volunteer for three hours every week with the Brownies AND Guides, whilst also continuing at the school for an additional 3 hours a week.
Olivia Bass was considering a career in vet science and so commenced volunteering at PAWS animal Sanctuary, completing over 50 hours. This year she has been volunteering at Grove Lodge vets and the Cat Whiskers vet clinic where, so far in total, she has completed over 100 hours service and has received excellent feedback for her work.
For their tremendous commitment to their local communities and being an example to other students, this year Chloe and Olivia have achieved at the highest level and will receive Platinum Work Store Awards and an extra gift of thanks from the college.
