On Thursday 24th May we celebrated our student and staff success with our annual 5 STAR awards. The award categories were learners of the year, apprentice of the year, 5 Star college values for students and staff and governance awards. We would like to congratulate every student and member of staff nominated and you can see the winners below.

A Level Learner of the Year – James Donlevy
James has shown exceptional commitment to his maths and further maths studies. He has 100% attendance across all his A level subjects and spends a lot of time outside of lessons working in the STEM LZs. His ISP is always up to date and of high standard. He’ll come and ask for extra help to make sure he understands key concepts.
He is developing into an excellent mathematician. James is a pleasure to have around the maths department as, although he takes his work seriously, he is cheeky and funny and always willing to help others. He even came to take orders from the maths staff when he was going to The Piggery for his lunch!
BTEC Learner of the Year – Daniel Nye
Dan has persevered with his studies (BTEC Medical Science) despite very difficult personal circumstances and debilitating health issues. He works really hard to stay positive and sets himself high standards.

Apprentice of the Year – Izzy King & Luke Scattergood
The power of collaborative working is at the heart of the practice of these two wonderful apprentices, who are well deserving of mutual recognition as Apprentice of the Year. They have made a huge contribution to the college community and to the students and staff in the performing arts team in particular. They are ever present, ever giving and most importantly they are delightful young people.

Most Improved Learner of the Year – Lily Greenfield
Lily struggled last year on the BTEC Public Services as she had difficult personal circumstances to deal with. This year she enrolled on criminology and I have seen such a change, she is cheerful and motivated and achieved a C for her controlled assessment which showed real creativity in the design for her campaign for change.

STEM Learner of the Year – Chiara Piombi
Chiara is an Italian student who is here for the year. She is an exceptionally talented mathematician who has excelled in maths, further maths and computer science. The fact that she has done all of this in her second language makes her all the more amazing. She was a member of the Worthing College team for the maths team challenge competition and been an active member of Maths Academy. She has had to learn the English language, some of the differences in the way we do maths in England compared to Italy. She has made exceptional progress and is on track to leave college with 3 A grades in her AS exams.

5 STAR Award for College Values (for Students) – Jasmine Carey
Jasmine Carey is a year 12 student who signed up to be a Journalist Marketing Intern within the Marketing Department in September. She has since produced 9 fantastic articles on a range of topics to help support the Marketing Team during national days/weeks. Article topics include: Anti-Bullying Week, Mental Health Week, How to Help the environment and Tips on how to de stress and revise ready for the start of Exams. These articles are full of research and valid points, and you can tell Jasmine has put a lot of effort into them. The fact she is doing all this on top of her studies and in her own time is why I think she deserves the 5 STAR Award.

5 STAR Award for College Values (for Staff) – Julia Flynn
Julia always goes above and beyond the requirements to give students the best chance of success. Despite many issues with work placements Julia always bends over backwards to make thing happen. She dedicates enormous extra hours to help provide advice and direction to students regarding their career progression.Julia has spent a massive amount of time and personal money to initiate, plan, fund raise and make the trip to Costa Rica happen. This is giving a group of students a ‘once in a life time’ opportunity to experience a different environment outside their comfort zone. I have seen her encourage and motivate students who are often shy or unwilling. The trip will provide these students with an enormous boost to their life experience and their personal statements or CVs. The trip will be working in an underprivileged school and with vital conservation projects. The trip will give the college fantastic exposure and reflect positively on the offer we provide to our students. The road to get to this stage has been long and taken many hours of Julia’s personal time and stretched her organisational skills to the max. She has remained cheerful throughout and always looked to overcome the numerous obstacles that have stood in the way of this expedition.

Annual Governance Award – Emma Prince & Louisa Wilson
For their regular contribution to the staff blog in relation to our EMpower strategy. Their entries are not just informative, empowering, congratulatory, encouraging but also witty, inquisitorial and puts a smile on the reader’s face. Their entries do not seek to underplay how, by teaching our students to be confident in Maths and English is not only important for their future but also makes them more rounded individuals. By testing us, adults, from time to time with their little brain teasers, helps to remind us that learning is indeed a life long process.Thank you, Emma and Louisa for teaching both ‘old’ and ‘young’ dogs new ‘tricks’.
