Congratulations to our netball squad who won the Regional round of National Schools. They will now represent the South of England in the National Finals. Read the match report below:
Worthing College netballers travelled to Wavell School, Farnborough representing Sussex in the regional round of National Schools. The girls started well beating Charters 8-1, Phillippa and Bethen shot well and some brilliant defending from Iona, Charlotte and Kira. 2nd match in was an 8-4 win over Oxford High, good centre court play by Cally and Liv.
The next match was against a strong Itchen College team. The match went goal for goal until half time and then the girls took it away in the second half with Shelby shooting well – winning 12-6. Another 2 good games beating Stowe 5-1 then Cowes 23-1 with some brilliant defending by all the squad and Ruth, Holly and Ellie playing well. The girls knew then they had qualified for the semi-finals despite losing 8-5 to Beaconsfield High.
In the semi-final Worthing played the other group winners Wellington and got off to a poor start. The weather conditions were wet and windy which didn’t help us – half time we were losing 4-1. Coach Tina made some inspired changes with Ellie moving to centre, Ashlene wa, Liv to ga with Bethen gs and said to the girls don’t give up, just two turnovers needed to win. Firstly Charlotte got a crucial interception and then Iona a second with Liv converting both shots – the match level with 20 seconds left. The ball went into Liv right on the edge of the circle, she shot and scored – Worthing College were the winners 6-5! Amazing!
The final was against Hurst but as both teams qualifying for the National Finals the pressure was off. The girls continued to play well and won the match 6-5. Such a great achievement for coach Tina Price and the whole squad as this is the first time in Worthing College history that the netball team has reached this level, great support from all of the parents and friends who braved the weather all day. Worthing College now represent the South of England in the National Finals on Saturday 17th March, Welwyn Garden City.
