Worthing College had 23 students qualify for the AOC National Championships held at Nottingham University last weekend representing the South East in women’s football, women’s rugby and tennis. They competed all weekend against the other 8 regions producing some great performances and results.
Our tennis players were outstanding throughout the whole weekend. Apprentice, Helen Skingley, and student, Ryan Young, were a formidable pairing in the mixed doubles and teamed up well with the other players from Peter Symonds to make up the South East team. They did not lose a match and came away as Gold Medal winners, a brilliant achievement.
The women’s footballers were defending their Silver Medal from last year and had a mixed weekend of results. They had some great wins but some losses as well to finish 5th overall, student, Beth Roe, was outstanding for Worthing College.
The women’s rugby players had some great results winning 50-0 in one game but lost to a quality Welsh team and after a couple of injuries they finished 4th overall.
A great weekend was had by everyone and the South East won the Wilkinson Sword trophy as the winning region overall.

Mark will be deeply missed, leaving behindthe many fond memories we have of him.Mark joined the college back in 2004 teaching Sport and Physical Education having previously taught at Worthing High School and Steyning Grammar. Over the years he will have worked with countless students and staff and I am sure they will all  look back fondly on a kind, courteous and most gentle man.

Rare apprenticeship secured through work experience for student Gabrielle

One of our fast track students ,Gabrielle George, has recently secured a very rare apprenticeship with Sussex Police. Here's her story:
"A couple months ago I did my work experience with Sussex Police as part of the BTEC Applied Law Fast Track Course.  I undertook a variety of roles, including being out on response, dealing with evidence, working within police HQ, aiding in investigations and signing people in for bail. Once I had completed my work experience I decided that I would like to work for the police so I went home and applied for every job I could.
I soon got a reply from one, a secretarial job, where they stated that I did not have the correct qualifications to carry out that role, however they did draw my attention to a secretarial apprentice position which I did qualify for. They invited me for an interview, at which I spoke about doing my work experience at Brighton's John St Station. I was successful and am looking forward to starting with Sussex Police shortly.
I believe my success is down to my work experience, which is something the college actively support as part of the course. It definitely enabled me to gain experience within the police and learn about their systems which was, I believe, instrumental in me securing the apprenticeship."

Work experience develops new skills for Media students

Former Student, Jonathan Brooks, approached Worthing College with a fantastic opportunity offering  students work experience with his company United Magic Studios.Media students, Sayna Araghi and Sydney Goddard, were the lucky ones and here's Sayne's overview of how she got on:
"During the past few months of working within United Magic Studios I have learnt lots of new skills in video editing, filming, tech usage and even handling client based projects. The team allowed me to help out on shoots on a massive scale, from projects that are purely based on concept building and video testing, to larger client based work such as my involvement with theVitality Brighton Half Marathon, creating behind the scenes promotional videos.
Overall my knowledge on media and client work has definitely increased and I have much more experience working on various types of briefs. In the future I hope to create my own channel / website and build my portfolio through creating different video pieces, slowly working my way into the industry as a cinematographer."
Jonathan commented, "Over the past 6 months, students, Sayna and Sydney, have developed multiple skills within video production and have become more confident filmmakers because of it. They have both shown exceptional creativity and eagerness to learn new techniques that they can now use within their own projects.
It’s a shame I only have them in on Tuesdays as they miss out on a lot of fun shoots. We’ll see if they want to work more in the summer holidays."

Chemistree oh Chemistree

Chemistry has a typically cool scientific approach when it comes to showing some Christmas spirit.
They have fashioned a Christmas Tree (we call it a Chemistree) using retort stands and clamps and then decorated it with round bottomed flasks filled with coloured chemical solutions, and home-grown crystal ornaments. And why the mole instead of the traditional star or fairy on top of the tree? It's based on an amount – a mole is the number of atoms in 12 grams of carbon. Ahh bless!

Each year we are amazed at what our students achieve on top of their study programmes and the Work Store Awards is our way to celebrate and congratulate some of those achievements.
To achieve a Work Store Award, a student must have completed a work placement or be volunteering over a longer period, they will have kept a reflective diary and received graded feedback from the organisation involved. There are three standard awards available at Bronze, Silver and Gold and these are awarded against strict criteria depending on the length of the placement and the standards achieved in the grading given by the organisation.
Alongside the Work Store Awards, students are also able to earn awards from outside organisations, for community and voluntary work undertaken in their own time such as The Lions International Award and OUTSET youth voluntary awards.

Rare Job Secured for Student Isabel

Congratulations to student, Isabel Brunning, who was recently appointed as a Business Administrator within a Law firm. Here's her story:
'I was coming close to finishing the BTEC applied Law Fast Track when my teacher, Sam, informed me of a potential position at a Law firm in Hove that she had been asked for applicants for.
I have been interested in undertaking the Legal Executive (CILEX) course at Chichester for some time and for this you need to secure qualifying employment, something that can be really hard to find. With Sam’s support I sent off my application and was really pleased to be called in for an interview.
It was great to hear they were supportive of future studies in the legal area. I think the work I completed in the Applied Law BTEC really gave me an edge, and I found out a few days later that I had got the job and I am due to start in June!'
