Christmas spirit hung in the air as the student union welcomed their guests to their annual winter celebration. Friday 2nd December, drinks were served and tunes were played as the students hosted entertainment, food and carol singing to reach out into the community, providing a fun and sociable afternoon for all.
Once everyone had taken their seats, the audience were treated to a solo performance of “Away in a manger” and a fun re-enactment of “Baby it’s cold outside” from two performing arts students, triggering a walk down memory lane for the captivated audience.
Later, there was a special visit from the Children First Nursery, who sang with tambourines which encouraged the audience to happily join in. The food was shared around, including steaming sausage rolls, classic sandwiches, and plenty of home-made cakes. “I come here every year,” one guest revealed. “To me, it marks the beginning of the festive season.” Following a short break to tuck into their meals, special guest and retired teacher from Worthing College, Allan White, performed a mixture of his favourite classics and his own original songs. It can certainly be said that the audience were entertained, as suggestions were shouted out and they sung along to almost every number. “He’s just brilliant. He’s performed here before, and I reminds me of how much I enjoyed last year’s party too.”
The afternoon concluded with a Christmas quiz and a raffle, where each guest received one free ticket. Luxury prizes like Body Shop gifts, homemade Christmas cakes, and delicious Belgian chocolates were on offer to win. As final goodbyes were said, students assisted their guests out, many of whom carried a number of mince pies they were planning to feast on later! An enjoyable afternoon was had by all, as the guests left feeling well-fed, happy and certainly very Christmassy.

Let’s make a DENt in homelessness – Worthing College hosts a successful charity week

With Christmas fast approaching, it has never been more important to remember those in the community less fortunate than ourselves. That is why students organised the annual charity week from 5th – 9th December, supporting Worthing Churches Homeless Project, Shelter, Save the Children and SERV – Blood Bikes.
A number of events took place throughout the week, including a pamper zone with nail technicians and massage therapists, a raffle for a luxury hamper prize, a reverse advent calendar and a ‘guess the weight of the sweets in the jar’ competition.
Undoubtedly, the main event of the week was the Den building competition, where students and staff from all different subject areas united to create the most sturdy and aesthetic den out of donated blankets, cardboard, and even football shirts. Judges Paul Amoo, Principle Paul Riley, Olivia Blake, Nancy Whish and Beth Watson announced the reigning champions to be the Maths and Science teams with their planetarium.
In true Christmas spirit, the college community was unified in supporting these well-deserved charities, raising awareness to both local and national issues as well as making donations. “Christmas is the hardest time of the year for those struggling in our community. It’s important we don’t take what we have for granted and make sure we give all we can at this time of year”  says Paul Riley, Principal. In total, £531 was raised along with hundreds of blankets and toys donated for the charities. The charities are delighted with the support shown by Worthing College for their worthy causes.

A Biotechnology Experience Day

A few of our Biology Students had the fantastic opportunity of attending a Biotechnology Experience Day on Wednesday 21st June 2017 at the University of Sussex. Biotechnology is a rapidly growing sector using living systems, such as cells, to make new products. This includes new medications for the treatment and prevention of human diseases, designing pest-resistant crops or generating biofuels with opportunities in academic and industry based research.
The experience provided our students with a practical insight into the study of Biotechnology and its associated career pathways such as medical and environmental biotechnology, molecular genetics and bioinformatics. During the day they interacted with scientists in working labs and got hands-on experience of how to look after and grow mammalian cells, while also hearing from researchers about their career pathway into Biotechnology.

Visual Arts and Media Awards Evening

An overview of the Visual Arts and Media Awards Evening 22nd June 2017.
The atmosphere at the Visual Arts and Media (VAM) private view was buzzing and anticipation was high as the Academy Awards presentation approached. The VAM team were delighted with the huge turnout to support the students and felt really proud of all their hard work and dedication this year. Agreeing the winners was a difficult task as all the nominations were fantastic.
The Academy Awards were introduced by Steven Foden, our Vice-Principal, who kicked off the event with a speech showing such enthusiasm about the exhibition (rumoured to be the best ever!) and talked of the value of creativity in education and in life.
Worthing College Governor, Richard Bradford, was also there as his company, Disquiet Dog,  sponsored some of the awards and supplied the extremely cool Disquiet Dog mugs as an additional bonus to the winners.
Feedback from parents, students, staff, visitors and governors was hugely positive, both in terms of the incredibly high standard and the variety of the work displayed. The exhibition was curated by the VAM team and I'd like to personally thank them for their continued dedication and passion in supporting our amazingly talented students. Finally, congratulations to all the winners!

Meet Jasper, our first College dog!

Jasper, a 2 year old black Labrador, will be joining us as a part-time colleague from September 2017.  He will be based in the Student Advice and Support office (G27).  We hope that he will be a calming influence on any students (and staff!) who may be having a bad day and could do with some unconditional love.  Research shows that having a pet to stroke and talk to has a positive effect on managing stress and anxiety, and so far, not one person has left the department without a smile on their face having met him!
Jasper comes with the highest commendations as to his behaviour and suitability for the role of ‘college dog’, and it is hoped that we can set up some ‘walk and talk’ sessions at lunchtimes for students who would like a bit of fresh air and a chat, where Jasper can be part of the proceedings. Jasper is also lucky enough to have his own Instagram page, so please do follow him on @jasperthecollegedog.

Welcome new students!

Worthing College welcomed 500 of their applicants, who are due to be starting the college this coming September, to a taster day on Tuesday 4th July. Volunteer student ambassadors guided excited newbies towards their classrooms and the day began with an introduction to college life. Having booked their subject sessions on the college website in advance, the process of choosing which taster lessons to attend was made a lot easier and less stressful, since they had more time to consider which A Levels or BTECs they were interested in taking for the next two years.
Everyone was encouraged to meet new people as they took part in exciting activities in every classroom. After receiving a breakdown of the course, Physics students made their own spectrometers out of old CDs and cardboard, allowing them to study patterns of light. Biology practical’s involved comparing lung capacity and height by looking at peak flow, whilst music students looked into the revolutionary work of the Beatles and discussed how their methods could influence their own compositions. Maths students used logical, statistical and algebraic activities to investigate Pascal’s triangle, and the CUPP (Competitive University Preparation Programme) was introduced to high achieving students, who debated controversial topics which challenge society’s norms. Enrichment sessions were also laid on around the college, including ultimate Frisbee, the Work-store drop in, the Christian union, and the Duke of Edinburgh. Student action encouraged those looking to challenge themselves to sign up for opportunities such as becoming a Student Rep, standing for the Student Union, applying for a Marketing Internship or College Ambassador.
Once the hard work was done, students and staff were treated to a free BBQ in the West Café courtyard, whilst enjoying the hot weather. Food freebies were also up for grabs, including curry provided by Love Joes, Love Smoothies, and cake from Southover Food. The day was a tremendous success, and we hope all new students are excited to be joining us in September.
If you are a current applicant, why not join our exclusive #OffToWorthingCollege Facebook group designed to keep you up to date with everything you need to know in preparation for coming to college as well as giving you the opportunity to ask questions of us about any aspect of college life or to talk to each other about issues that you're interested in or want to share.

Exciting new partnership with the Institute of Physics

17th July 2017, Worthing College signed a memorandum of understanding with the Institute of Physics to join as a partner in the Stimulating Physics Network, which is a national education project funded and operated since 2009 by the Department for Education (DfE) and managed by the Institute.
The project is based on the principle that physics A level is a ‘facilitating subject’, providing young people with access to a range of economically valuable careers paths. However, physics is often perceived as a difficult subject and there is a strongly ingrained gender imbalance nationally in A-level physics, with girls making up only 21% of entries, despite performing as well or better than boys at GCSE.
Over the next two years, in the first instance, the Stimulating Physics Network aims to:
Contribute to a national increase in the number of students at state-funded schools and colleges in England progressing to A-level physics.Significantly increase the number of girls progressing to A level physics.Transition the project into a more substantially sustainable model beyond 2019.
As a partner, the teaching and support staff involved in the delivery of physics at the college will gain invaluable access to teaching and learning coaching and  continuing professional development opportunities through the Institute of Physics and will participate in evidence based interventions in selected schools to increase the number of girls progressing to A-level physics.
College Principal, Paul Riley said ‘Joining the network is an invaluable opportunity for the college at this time as it continues to be at the forefront of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths provision for post-16 students locally. Membership will bring rich rewards for both our staff and our future and current students as we will access a first-class bespoke programme of support and resources to help us enhance subject knowledge and pedagogical approaches, particularly in the teaching of practical activities. The College’s recently revised mission is clear that we are here ‘to inspire, build confidence and prepare you for the life you want to live’; joining network will most definitely support us in delivering this mission’.

Students’ Science Success

Extremely proud of the students who carried off two major awards from the sixth annual Big Bang Fair South East and the Regional Young Scientists and Young Engineers Competition.
The six-strong team were runners-up in the Senior Engineering category and will go on to the national finals next March. Their project, “Standardisation of Components with Tablet Manufacture,” also won the Crawley Borough Council Prize for Creativity.
The team of Charlie Winkley, Kai Bass, Ben Aya, Harrison Ball, Benjamin Smithbury and Hannah Dunn-Coleman (picture below) set out to design a system to identify each component of equipment used in the transfer and weighing of Augmentin.
They had found that when equipment was washed, all components needed to be identified and put back together. Without a system, components could go missing, were expensive to replace and could halt production.
Hannah Dunn-Coleman said that the team had worked well together and felt they were lucky to be working with local pharmaceutical company GSK. “It gave us an insight into what they do and what problems they solve,” she added.
Judges at the Big Bang Fair South East said that the students had come up with a “simple and effective solution.” They had been able to demonstrate progress from the original concept to the finished design in an “excellent team project that is creative in its outcome, but massively effective.”

On the 5th and 12th of July, we opened our Visual and Performing Arts departments to year 10 students from local schools for two creative and exciting days of design and movement.
Split into teams, the departments interlinked through a collection of costumes, made from recycled materials, later worn in a dramatic fashion show. Coaching them through the days were an array of college students and staff led by Catriona Muir, Visual Arts and Media manager, and Rachel Maddix, Performing Arts manager.
Students interested in Media were invited to photograph and film the days where footage was then collected by Media teacher, Louise Peacock, and turned into a short video which you can see below.
When asked for feedback, students from St Andrews for Boys agreed that the day involved ‘great, inspiring activities’ and said it was ‘a real showcase for the College’.
Special thanks to students from St Andrews, Durrington, Chatsmore and Davison for a great day!

Nadia Chalk, artist and co founder of Creative Waves, a Worthing based Community Arts organisation worked with the L2 BTEC Art and Design students this week. Nadia gave the students insights into the skills and attitudes necessary to work as a creative professional by showing her work. She then showed them how to create 3D structures from their drawings using withies and tissue paper.
Nadia was so impressed by the students hard work, determination and creative decision making, that she has now offered 4 of the students work experience on her Creative waves project, a collaboration with Worthing Museum.
